ROMM Around The World: A Different magazine show on television
by Romm Burlat
It has been a childhood dream to see myself hosting on television. Among my talents, this is the one I haven't done yet. I did some dancing and singing from high school. These talents were further developed in college when I was accepted as member of the Silliman University Dance Troupe and singing choristers. At 18, I was the dance champion of the whole university which branched out to the community where I vied in some competitions and won. Although I was not really a very good singer but I had my moments of fame in some contests. Writing followed when I tried being a contributor to our school paper. After graduation, I honed my writing skills when I was picked as Editor in-chief of a Coca-Cola plant newsletter.
My hosting skills started in college but was further enhanced when I worked on cruise ships as a cruise staff. In 1998, I was promoted as the first Filipino Cruise Director. This afforded me the chance to host and direct shows and events on the cruise for several nationalities mostly from the US, Europe and Australia.
After 15 years, I went back to the Philippines and did some jobs which included being manager of a hotel casino resort. After three years, showbiz beckoned. I started acting on television and movies until I got the chance to be a director on films, TV and pageants.
Now that I have directed 13 short and feature films with three Best Directors up my sleeve, I thought of making an additional route of my showbiz career, i.e.,Hosting on Television. At the outset, I had some apprehensions since as a novice on TV hosting, no producer will gamble on me. Although I directed one TV show last year, hosting is totally a different thing. The expenses of putting up a show scares me. Nevertheless, since I know writing and directing, I decided on doing the three roles as a writer, director and host of the show, yes, to lower the cost. Then I have a few friends who has some knowledge on camera to help me with the production. But most of all, I would like to give special gratitude to Mr. Danilo Mangahas of EuroTV for trusting me to come up with a travel talk show every Friday, from 6:00pm to 7:00pm. Pilot episode is on January 25th
Thus, the birth of ROMM Around The World. Because I have been to 83 countries and principalities, I told myself to come up with a travel show. Through this program, I can impart to the viewers my experience and knowledge on the countries I visited which they may plan to visit in the future.
There are always first-time jitters, but with your help, I am confident my new show will successfully take-ff. Thank you in advance.
