ROMM AROUND THE WORLD
by Direk Romm Burlat
It has always been my dream to be a Host on national television or at least in an online show where I can showcase my gift of gab while sharing my knowledge on topics that I am very familiar with.
Since I was a kid I don't have any problem speaking in public. This gift was enhanced during my college days at Silliman University. Also, when I was sent by the Rotary International for a group study exchange to Texas, USA where I had to deliver speeches in different Rotary Clubs in South Texas. When I worked abroad, my familiarity on the English language was further strengthened. In fact, I can speak the language in different accents like British, Australian, American and even Singlish (Singapore English). Moreover, it is not only the language I have learned to live with but I also gained more knowledge on several issues owing it to my association with people from different walks of life from the different countries of the world.
Modesty aside, I have traveled to 83 countries and principalities to all the 7 continents of the world (North America, South America, Antarctica, Europe, Asia, Africa and Australia). My first-hand experience of these countries paved the idea of a travel show for my first television program. I can easily do my own script and direct my travel program which means lesser staff and lesser cost but not sacrificing the quality of the program.
Coming up with a travel show has been planned since two years ago but my busy schedule didn't allow me to steal a slice of my time for this. Now that I have finally decided to air my pilot telecast next month, I have to spare time, days or even weeks to make the first episode worth watching. I will be featuring one country per episode so I can properly dissect the discussion to focus on the geography, language, currency, customs and traditions, tourist attractions, shopping areas, the dos and donts of each featured nation. Not to make the show boring, I will have a few fast rising talents to provide entertainment and I will also be inviting a guest who has been to the featured country.
First-time jitters are inevitable. Although microphone work is not a problem to me but how the viewers accept the show give me some butterflies in my stomach. Will it rate or not? Will I have more constructive than destructive criticisms? I guess I won't have to think about this. I will just have to do the best I can to come up with a program that people will be positively talking about. With the experiences under my belt, I am optimistic this program billed, ROMM AROUND THE WORLD will be successful. Of course, there will be numerous critics but the comments for sure, will have some silver lining attached to it.
I have done international hosting and some valuable film and TV works so I firmly believe I am more than ready to face the challenge of TV hosting or at least online hosting. At the outset, I don't dream of becoming the next Larry King or David Letterman or Jay Leno because this is a tall order. Locally, I want to follow the footsteps of Boy Abunda or Edu Manzano. But all these will follow. At the moment, I will just have to prepare everything to at least give the viewers the value of their time and the knowledge they get from the program. I remember interviewing Hollywood actress-singer Kathrine McPhee and the original host of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire, Regis Philbin in New York City. That time, I was still young but I was confident with what I was doing. Ergo, now that I am much older and more experienced, I believe ROMM AROUND THE WORLD will never go wrong. I will just put my mind and heart unto it. But the success of this endeavor will come from all your support. I hope you will join me in my
"From whom much has been given, much is expected."
